The Skirt. One of the oldest styles of clothing, after the loincloth, to grace the human form. Both female and male. This is prevalent in most cultures, Native American, Europe (the Scottish kilt). Once a rectangular piece of material of animal skin or leaves woven together and wrapped around the waist. Women wore their skirts long as a mark of their modesty as well as their prestige, this because before the Industrial Revolution, fabric was expensive. Until the 19th century, skirts and dresses emphasized the waist, while enlarging the hips. “’The skirt has been a crucial part of women’s dress for centuries.’. “’The skirt has been a crucial part of women’s dress for centuries,’ says Valerie Steel, the director of the museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She also says ‘Like a high-heeled shoe, there is a lot of eroticism packed into a skirt.’ The skirt is the second-oldest garment known to mankind, only loin cloths predate it. The Egyptians wore wrapped material around their waists, too. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a sign of status and beauty: the narrowness of a woman’s waist. Towards the end of the 19th century, skirts became more streamlined to the body and in the 20th century, the hardships of war required women to wear shorter, more work-friendly clothing. This marked the beginning of the upward journey of the skirt hem, which went from ankle-length to calf-length, and then knee-length by the 1960’s. The micro-mini is now worn on its own, with stockings or with leggings. Skirts have become a staple in any woman’s wardrobe, their ability to mix and match with the same tops that are teamed with jeans and trousers make them convenient and versatile. As with empires, hemlines have risen and fallen, and we now have the legacy of all the different skirt lengths possible.
The mini was born and we haven’t looked back. Or down. Skirts are dream creations of femininity and fairy fantasy. Nothing like the soft, satin swish of material caressing the bare leg.
