Hooded garments date back to medieval Europe or earlier. Monks wore tunics with hoods (known as ‘cowls’), while outdoor workers wore capes with hoods (chaperon).
The word ‘hood’ derives from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘höd’, having the same root as the word ‘hat’.
Founded in 1919, the US company Champion made the first hooded sweatshirt in the 1930s. Hoods were initially added to sweatshirts to keep labourers warm during the bitter winters in upstate New York.
In 1976, Rocky Balboa gave the hooded sweatshirt its iconic status in the blockbuster sports drama movie ‘Rocky’. The rags-to-riches story of how an uneducated, but kind-hearted Italian-American amateur boxer gets a shot at the world heavyweight championship. Since this movie, the grey hoodie has been prevalent in iconic running scenes in such films including the classic thriller ‘Marathon Man’ and the television series ‘House of Cards’.
In the 70’s, hooded sweatshirts became ‘uniform’ at universities as their names were emblazoned on these items of clothing. They were visible and a walking advertisement. Everyone had a uni-hoodie.
