The earliest use of candles is often attributed to the Ancient Egyptians, who made rushlights or torches by soaking the pithy core of reeds in melted animal fat, with no wick. Wicked candles were used from 3,000 B.C. by the Egyptians, with the ancient Romans being credited with developing the wicked candle before that time by dipping rolled papyrus repeatedly in melted tallow or beeswax. Candles were used to light homes, to aid travelers at night, and in religious ceremonies.
The candle symbolises light in the darkness – illumination. A symbol of holy illumination of the spirit of truth, in many religions and beliefs. Candles are lit in times of death as they signify the light in the next world. Candles exact symbolisms are quite varied, but the idea of the light in the darkness is universal.
